The federal government should immediately resume funding for the $1 billion project to install a high-tech fish deterrent system at the Brandon Road Lock and Dam near Chicago. This crucial project aims to prevent the invasive Asian carp from entering the Great Lakes and gaining access to tributaries across the Northeast, posing a severe threat to the region's $7 billion fishing industry and aquatic ecosystems. Halting grants due to spending cuts has already led Illinois to withdraw its financial commitment, jeopardizing the entire endeavor. Allowing Asian carp to infiltrate the Great Lakes could have devastating consequences for native fish populations and the livelihoods and recreation opportunities that depend on them. Protecting the Great Lakes from invasive species like Asian carp must be a priority, and resuming federal funding for preventative measures like the Brandon Road Lock and Dam project is an essential step. The potential economic and environmental costs of inaction are simply too high.
