Spreading Lies & Misinformation is Deadly - Pass Accountability Legislation Now

To: Sen. Zaffirini, Sen. Cornyn, Lt. Gov. Patrick, Pres. Trump, Rep. Casar, Rep. Flores, Sen. Cruz, Gov. Abbott

March 10

Dear [Congressperson/Senator], Misinformation has done irreparable harm to our democracy, fueling events like the January 6 riot and vaccine skepticism. These crises prove the urgent need for legislation to curb the spread of false information (New Yorker, March 2025). Wikipedia has set a strong example in the fight against misinformation. Its volunteer editors fact-check content, ensuring accuracy and transparency. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Wikipedia provided reliable data while false narratives spread unchecked elsewhere (New Yorker, March 2025). Figures like Elon Musk attack Wikipedia when it challenges misinformation, yet we need more of its commitment to truth. Congress and our state governments must act now to protect public trust by supporting policies that combat misinformation and uphold fact-based discourse (New Yorker, March 2025).
