The pink is not helping. The signs are not helping. They are nice in concept, and they look pretty, but they are less than the least that can be done by you, our elected representatives. We the people are in the streets protesting, on the front lines directly defending what we value. Our voices are not pleading for you to stand with us in symbolic solidarity. We beg of you to take action, real, meaningful action, in ways that only you can.
We the people cannot force our way into the Treasury when it is being held hostage by an entitled, unelected billionaire and his gang of 20-something sycophants. You can. We the people cannot stand and shout during the president’s state of the union address, drowning out the flood of misinformation and lies he spews. You can. We the people cannot be with you in the hallowed halls of our nation’s capital, holding your hand and guiding you step by step through resisting the rise of fascism. You can, and must, take those steps yourselves.
We are not asking you to politely request that the dictator stop amassing power, that he stop tearing through our democracy with eager claws of greed. We are asking you to get mean! Get dirty! Do not suffer in silence, make them hear you, social convention notwithstanding! Do not cling to the rule book that he and his bullies so gleefully trample! Do not beg the evil to change its ways, do not wait and hope it resolves on its own!
“That act of the Spartan Boy is greatly praised, Who hid the wolf under his cloak, Letting it devour him, uncomplainingly. It is braver, I think, to snatch the wolf forth, And fight him openly, even in the street, Amid dust and howls of pain.”
File movement after movement to impeach this man, regardless of if you think you have the votes. Physically Push your way into the rooms you are being held out of, throwing your weight against the oppressors wholly like we wish we could. Do not resolve to be quiet and hope for the chance to be cunning, be our heroes! Be brave, and bold, and brash, and a true opponent! The enemy will say what they will, they have been for years. Throw patience to the wind, throw caution to the wind, and for the love of all that is just, fight back! We the people beg of you: Take up the sword now, before it is too late.
