Reject President's unconstitutional third term rhetoric
To: Sen. Cornyn, Sen. Cruz
From: A constituent in Houston, TX
April 3
I urge you to forcefully oppose and speak out against President Trump's repeated statements about seeking an unconstitutional third term. As my Senator, your primary duty is to represent the American people's interests, which are best served by upholding the Constitution's clear limit of two presidential terms.
We must make clear that no one is above the law, not even the President, and that Constitutional bounds on executive authority must be respected. Allowing a violation of this founding principle would seriously damage our democracy and system of checks and balances.
Your role as my elected representative comes with the responsibility to defend our Constitution regardless of political affiliation. President Trump's anti-constitutional rhetoric is not making America great again, nor will it make America great in a future with an illegal third term. Such statements fundamentally undermine the rule of law that has guided our nation for over two centuries.
It is our collective responsibility – as citizens, as a community, and yours specifically as an elected official – to take these statements seriously. You must openly oppose them in public, in private, and in any rooms where you represent the American people. This alarming situation should not be a partisan issue at all, but rather a unified defense of our democratic system.
I ask that you publicly reject any rhetoric that suggests circumventing term limits and reaffirm your commitment to protecting American democracy by safeguarding it from authoritarian impulses that threaten its foundations.
