I am writing to express my strong opposition to any proposed legislation that would ban or restrict the wearing of face masks in public spaces across New York state. Such a measure would represent a severe infringement on personal freedoms and civil liberties. The use of face masks has become an accepted and often necessary practice, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Masks provide vital protection against the spread of respiratory illnesses and should remain an option for those who wish to safeguard their health or the health of vulnerable individuals around them. Furthermore, a blanket ban on masks raises significant concerns over individual privacy and safety. Many people, including protesters and activists, rely on masks to protect their identities and avoid potential retaliation or harassment for exercising their constitutionally protected rights to free speech and assembly. While public safety is undoubtedly a priority, curtailing the use of masks is an excessive and misguided approach that would do little to address legitimate concerns over crime or violence. Instead, it would needlessly infringe upon the rights and well-being of law-abiding citizens. I urge you to reconsider any proposed mask ban legislation and to prioritize measures that uphold the civil liberties and personal freedoms that are fundamental to our democratic society. Such a sweeping restriction would be a step in the wrong direction for the people of New York.
