An Open Letter

To: Gov. Cox

From: A constituent in American Fork, UT

March 20

I am writing to express my profound disappointment regarding your recent op-ed supporting former President Donald Trump’s plan to dismantle the U.S. Department of Education. This stance not only undermines the foundational structures of our educational system but also reflects a troubling alignment with policies that could harm our state’s educational integrity. The Department of Education plays a crucial role in ensuring equal access to quality education, administering federal student aid, and enforcing educational laws that protect against discrimination. Dismantling this department could jeopardize these essential functions, adversely affecting students and educators across Utah. Furthermore, your public support for President Trump’s initiative raises concerns about the direction in which you intend to lead our state’s educational policies. Aligning with a figure whose policies have been divisive and, at times, detrimental to public education does not serve the best interests of Utahns. Such actions could be perceived as prioritizing political allegiance over the well-being of our educational system. I urge you to reconsider your position and advocate for policies that strengthen, rather than dismantle, the institutions that support our educators and students. Upholding the integrity of our educational system is paramount for the continued growth and prosperity of Utah. Thank you for your attention to this critical matter.
