Preserve free speech, halt activist's deportation proceedings

To: Pres. Trump, Rep. Miller, Sen. Capito, Sen. Justice

From: A verified voter in Charleston, WV

March 11

The arrest and potential deportation of Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil by immigration authorities raises serious concerns about suppressing free speech and targeting individuals based on their activism and views. As a lawful permanent resident, Khalil should not face removal proceedings absent very compelling justifications rooted in actual criminal conduct or threats to public safety. Deporting Khalil solely due to his role in pro-Palestinian protests at Columbia University would constitute a disturbing violation of First Amendment rights and send a chilling message about the consequences of voicing dissent on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. While viewpoints may diverge on this complex issue, the right to peaceful protest and expression must be safeguarded on college campuses. Upholding constitutional protections for all residents, regardless of national origin or political beliefs, is essential for preserving American values of free speech and democratic discourse. Khalil's case underscores the need for immigration enforcement that is fair, proportionate, and does not discriminate based on ideology or activist stances. Proceeding with his deportation would undermine these fundamental principles.
