Our elected representatives have a solemn duty to uphold the constitutional rights of all individuals, regardless of their immigration status. Deporting Venezuelan immigrants without due process or fact finding is illegal, unconstitutional, unAmerican, and inhumane. It sets a dangerous precedent that undermines the very foundations of our democracy. Furthermore, the indiscriminate detention of those here legally seeking asylum (seeking freedom from communist countries) and then putting then putting them on a plane to El Salvador where they will be experiencing horrific conditions in a harsh working camp with known terrible treatment and little to no food is abhorrent and a gross overreach that cannot be tolerated. These actions not only infringe upon the civil liberties enshrined in our Constitution but also erode public trust in our institutions and is a humanitarian crisis. It is imperative that you and other members of Congress take decisive action to address these egregious violations of civil rights and common decency and humanity. Concrete steps must be taken to rein in the unchecked power of the President, Sec. of Homeland Security, Sec. of State, and ICE and prevent the targeting of law-abiding individuals based on their political views or immigration status. As our elected representative, you have a responsibility to be vocal advocate for the rights and freedoms that define our nation. Failing to take a strong stance against these transgressions would be a dereliction of duty and a betrayal of the principles upon which our democracy was founded along with complicit behavior. I, along with fellow Hoosiers, and all American people demand that you take definitive action to protect the civil liberties of all individuals, regardless of their immigration status or political beliefs.
