I am writing to express my deep concern and outrage over the recent decision by the Trump administration to terminate funding for legal representation for unaccompanied migrant children. This decision, which formally took effect in March 2025, has left approximately 26,000 vulnerable children without access to legal aid as they navigate the complex and intimidating immigration court system.
This funding cut is not only cruel but also undermines the fundamental principles of justice and due process. These children, some as young as two years old, are now expected to face deportation proceedings alone, without the guidance of an attorney to advocate for their rights and safety. The consequences of this decision are devastating, as it places these children at risk of rapid deportation and potential harm in their home countries.
Organizations like the Florence Immigrant and Refugee Rights Project and the Acacia Center for Justice have been providing critical legal services to these children for years, ensuring that they receive fair treatment and protection under the law. The termination of this funding jeopardizes their ability to continue this vital work and leaves these children without the support they desperately need.
I urge you to take immediate action to address this issue. Congress must prioritize the reinstatement of funding for legal representation for unaccompanied migrant children and hold the administration accountable for its actions. These children deserve compassion, protection, and a fair chance to present their cases in court.
