An Open Letter

To: Sen. Padilla, Sen. Schiff, Rep. Thompson

From: A constituent in Davis, CA

March 24

I am a voting constituent from Davis, California, and I am writing to express my deep concern over a troubling issue regarding the security and confidentiality of sensitive government communications. Personnel with access to classified military operations have been discussing highly sensitive matters on the unsecured Signal messaging platform. Even more concerning, it appears that these conversations have included individuals who are not authorized to access such information, specifically the editor-in-chief of The Atlantic. The use of an unsecured communication channel to discuss covert military operations represents an alarming breach of protocol. It undermines national security, endangers the safety of our armed forces, and exposes our country to potential exploitation by hostile actors. Signal is by NO means an appropriate platform for discussing matters of national security. Its use is inexcusable. The fact that someone outside of government circles—especially a journalist with a significant public platform—was included in these discussions only compounds the issue. It raises serious questions about the vetting process and the integrity of internal security measures. Journalistic integrity aside, such disclosures can lead to a gross mismanagement of classified data and jeopardize the safety of individuals involved in covert operations. This MUST be addressed, and addressed NOW. Thank you.
