The overcrowding and inhumane conditions in immigrant detention facilities are unacceptable and demand immediate action. Reports indicate severe overcrowding, with some facilities operating at nearly triple their capacity. Detainees are being forced to stand for days on end due to lack of space, while others are subjected to freezing temperatures and denied access to basic hygiene. Children are inevitably caught in these appalling circumstances. This violates fundamental human rights and the very principles this nation was founded upon. Urgent reforms are critical to upholding the dignity of all people and reflecting our highest values as a society. Concrete steps must be taken to address overcrowding, improve living conditions, and explore alternatives to detention that respect due process while prioritizing humane treatment.
