Fund Libraries and museums agencies

The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) plays a vital role in supporting cultural institutions across the nation. The decision to place the entire IMLS staff on administrative leave raises serious concerns about the continuity of critical grant programs that fund libraries and museums. These institutions serve as invaluable community hubs, providing access to educational resources, workforce training, and cultural preservation initiatives, particularly in underserved areas. The IMLS awarded $266 million in grants last year alone, impacting projects like workforce development at the Museum of Discovery and Science in Orlando, psychological support programs for library patrons in Iowa, and basic library services for Native American tribes. Terminating these grants would be detrimental to the communities they serve. Small and rural libraries, which heavily rely on federal funding, would be disproportionately affected by budget cuts or the elimination of IMLS programs. Public libraries are primarily funded through local taxes, and federal support is crucial for sustaining their digital collections, online services, and outreach efforts. I urge you to advocate for the restoration of the IMLS staff and the continuation of its grant programs. Libraries and museums are vital community resources that foster education, cultural preservation, and economic opportunities. Ensuring their long-term sustainability should be a priority.
