I'm writing to request decisive action against the escalating detentions and deportations of permanent residents and visa holders in the United States. The cases now extend beyond Mahmoud Khalil, a green card holder detained and threatened with deportation for exercising his constitutional right to free speech. Now, we have learned about Fabian Schmidt, a green card holder subject to violent interrogation at Logan Airport. And just yesterday we learned about Dr. Rasha Alawieh, a doctor and H-1B visa holder deported against judge's orders. I am extremely concerned about the willful deportation and detentions of legal residents. If legal residence doesn't allow a person to stay in the country, we are indeed living in an autocracy. No one's rights are safe. Anyone will be able to be deported, for any reason. That is terrifying. I am also extremely concerned about the executive branch's disregard for legal rulings. The disregard for the constitution and our basic system of governance is nothing short of a political crisis. As a legislator, you should be as worried as I am about executive overreach. It is time to defend the constitution. How are you going to do that, from the position we elected you to?
