The SAVE Act (H.R. 22) is a blatant attempt at voter suppression that will create unnecessary barriers for millions of eligible Americans to exercise their fundamental right to vote. Requiring citizens to present a birth certificate or passport in person for voter registration is an unreasonable and burdensome requirement that disproportionately impacts women, seniors, low-income individuals, and communities of color. Over 21 million Americans lack immediate access to documentary proof of citizenship, 140 million do not have a passport, and 69 million women have a different last name than on their birth certificate. This legislation serves no legitimate purpose, as there is no evidence of widespread voter fraud that warrants such draconian measures. It is a transparent effort to disenfranchise certain segments of the population and suppress voting rights. I urge you to reject this undemocratic bill and protect the sacred principle of universal suffrage for all eligible citizens.
