Protect Social Security; Ensure Benefit Delivery for Millions

To: Sen. Gillibrand, Sen. Schumer, Rep. Riley

From: A constituent in Claryville, NY

March 19

The potential cuts to the Social Security Administration staff and the dismantling of critical systems threaten the timely delivery of benefits for millions of elderly and disabled Americans who rely on Social Security payments for their livelihood. With staffing already at a 50-year low prior to the proposed 12% workforce reduction, longer wait times, delayed claims processing, and increased improper payments are inevitable consequences that will severely impact vulnerable populations. The rhetoric questioning the integrity and purpose of Social Security appears to be an intentional effort to undermine public trust and potentially justify further cuts or privatization efforts. However, Social Security has reliably delivered monthly payments for 90 years with exceptionally low overhead costs compared to private insurers. Gutting the agency's workforce and outdated but functional IT infrastructure risks system failures that could disrupt benefit payments for extended periods. These reckless actions put at risk the financial security of over 70 million Americans who have paid into Social Security throughout their working lives. I urge you to protect this vital social safety net program and ensure the Social Security Administration has the resources and skilled personnel necessary to continue serving our nation's retirees and disabled citizens without interruption or undue burden. The livelihood of millions depends on preserving and strengthening Social Security, not dismantling it.
