DOGE Post Office cuts hurt veterans

To: Sen. Cornyn, Rep. Van Duyne, Sen. Cruz

From: A constituent in Dallas, TX

March 22

I am writing to express my shock at the Department of Government Efficiency’s plans to slash the staff of the U.S, Postal Service nationwide. The Postal Service employs more than 100,000 veterans. These cuts will disproportionately affect those retired service members who have served our country honorably. My wife and I are both children of veterans. My father is buried in a national cemetery. That DOGE is making these cuts at the behest of this Republican administration makes this situation even more shocking. The pro-veteran party has become the anti-veteran party. As someone raised in a family with deep military roots, to me that is stunning. This is made worse by the fact these cuts are being made by unvetted 20-something IT programmers, under the direction of an unelected billionaire. No one making these cuts has any idea what it is like to serve their country. Legally, this ersatz ‘department’ has no right to fire these veterans, especially in such a haphazard fashion. If these firings follow the course of earlier DOGE firings, many of these workers will have to be rehired and compensated. Having to pay back wages to workers unlawfully fired—while creating chaos in an agency that will now need fixing—is the exact opposite of efficiency. My wife and I strongly urge you to stand up for our veterans in the Postal Service and demand DOGE not fire them in the name of their non-existent ‘efficiency.’
