This proposed Texas legislation, HB 3817, would criminalize transgender individuals for simply being their authentic selves and living openly. Such a law promoting discrimination and marginalization of an already vulnerable group must be firmly opposed to prevent it from setting a dangerous precedent and emboldening similar regressive policies nationwide. Moving towards codifying intolerance and dehumanization of transgender Americans would represent a disturbing shift towards facism that violates core principles of human rights, dignity, and equality under the law for all citizens regardless of gender identity.
