I’m writing as a concerned constituent to urge you to take action in response to the recent decisions by the Department of Education to pull federal funding from both the Mississippi Humanities Council and the Mississippi Food Network.
These cuts, as detailed in recent news reports (MSN article on the Humanities Council (https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/doge-pulls-federal-funding-for-mississippi-humanities-council-see-how-it-affects-state/ar-AA1CfPCx?ocid=BingNewsSerp) and MSN article on broader impacts (https://www.msn.com/en-us/politics/government/the-impact-will-be-felt-far-and-wide-doge-and-federal-cuts-now-impacting-organizations-in-the-state/ar-AA1ChzN7?ocid=BingNewsSerp)), will have far-reaching consequences for some of our state’s most essential services.
The Mississippi Humanities Council supports educational programs, historical preservation, scholarships, and public forums that directly benefit underserved and rural communities. Its programming helps foster a more informed and engaged citizenry—something we need now more than ever.
Likewise, the Mississippi Food Network provides critical food assistance to thousands of Mississippians, including children, families, and seniors. With rising food insecurity across the state, now is not the time to pull support from organizations that are keeping our communities fed and stable. These cuts not only reduce access to basic needs, but they also undermine the local organizations working hardest to meet them.
Both of these organizations are doing meaningful, on-the-ground work that has a direct impact on people’s lives. Removing their funding is not just a bureaucratic decision—it is one that will be felt by real people in every corner of our state.
I urge you to fight for the restoration of federal funding to both the Mississippi Humanities Council and the Mississippi Food Network. Your advocacy can help ensure that our communities continue to have access to the educational and nutritional support they so urgently need.
