I am writing to express deep concern over the case of Mahmoud Khalil, a U.S. resident who is facing imminent deportation to Jordan for engaging in constitutionally protected speech.
Mr. Khalil has lived in the United States for over two decades, building a life and raising a family here. His case is especially troubling because the government is seeking his removal solely based on his social media posts—speech that is clearly protected under the First Amendment. Mr. Khalil has no criminal record, and his removal sets a dangerous precedent for punishing individuals for exercising their right to free speech.
This situation raises serious civil liberties concerns. The First Amendment protects all people in the United States, regardless of immigration status. Using immigration law to penalize speech is an alarming and unacceptable abuse of power.
I urge you to call on the Department of Homeland Security to halt Mr. Khalil’s deportation and reaffirm our country’s commitment to free expression and due process.
Please take action to ensure that our laws are applied justly and that our fundamental rights are upheld for all.
Thank you for your time and leadership.
