The SAVE Act is a harmful bill that would create unnecessary barriers to voting and disenfranchise millions of eligible voters across the country. It requires restrictive citizenship documentation that many citizens simply do not have access to, like passports or updated birth certificates after a name change. This would exclude naturalized citizens, trans people who have changed their name, married individuals, and many others from being able to register and exercise their fundamental right to vote. The bill also mandates unwarranted voter roll purges under the guise of election integrity, despite no evidence of widespread fraud. This legislation does nothing to safeguard elections, but instead threatens to silence vast swaths of the electorate and undermine faith in our democracy. Over 21 million Americans lack easy access to the documents that would be newly required under this law. We should be removing obstacles to voting, not erecting more barriers that disproportionately burden marginalized communities. Protecting the freedom to vote for all eligible citizens must be the top priority. I urge you to reject this dangerous and undemocratic bill. Vote no on the SAVE Act and uphold the sacred right to vote that sustains our republic. Our democracy depends on expanding access to the ballot box, not curtailing it through unnecessary and discriminatory voting restrictions.
