Speak up for diversity and opportunity

To: Rep. Fitzgerald, Sen. Baldwin, Sen. Johnson

From: A constituent in Waukesha, WI

March 20

I am a mother of two school-age children, a teacher, and a proud member of my community in Waukesha, Wisconsin. I am concerned about the many reversals and policies related to diversity coming out of the executive office right now. As someone with a Masters in History and a woman, I know that many of the policies being reversed right now came about for specific reasons. For many years, we had systems in place that did not allow fair opportunities for success to a variety of people. We had segregated facilities, jobs that were not allowed for women, and classroom materials that only showed narrow views of the historical narrative. The president has continually stated that these current decisions are made to create a more level system, to take away privilege and give all an honest chance to make it if you work hard. Based on our history, "hard work" was not a path to success for many people. Women like me could work as hard as we wanted or be as smart as anyone else, but not have the same opportunities as men. I am concerned for the future world these decisions are setting up for my own daughter, who is 8 and fiercely independent. She does work hard, is funny, is smart, and is creative, and I want her to be able to walk into any job or life she chooses. I am concerned for the future world these decisions are setting up for my son, who is 11 and has learning challenges. He is deeply intelligent, passionately curious, and one of the kindest people I know. The supports he has in school do not give him an advantage over anyone else; they make sure he stands on a level ground with his peers. These diversity policies are not "woke" in the president's definition. They are human. They are kind. They give room for us to look at the person next to us and agree that they should have the same shot as I do to create the life we dream. Speak up for diversity. It is what has made our nation great and will build a strong foundation for our future and our children. Speak up now on behalf of the many women like me who voted for you.
