Yesterday, President Trump imposed tariffs on nearly every country in the world. He seems to be driven by his inaccurate idea that these countries have taken advantage of the United States, and is enamored by the thought that these tariffs will generate large revenues for the country. But the reality is something very different. Tariffs are a regressive tax on Americans, and will raise the cost of almost everything for low and middle income people who are already struggling to make ends meet. And other countries have already announced retaliatory tariffs that will make things even worse. Tariffs are meant to be used in a targeted approach to protect US businesses from unfair trade practices, not to grow and economy. And trade is not a zero sum game. Economists all over the world agree that these tariffs and resulting trade war will increase inflation, reduce GDP, cause job losses, and slow down manufacturing. President Trump is risking our economy, that until he took office, was the best in the world, as well as the global economy on tariffs that don't seem to have any thoughtful analysis about the downstream effects. And as far as I can tell, there have been no attempts to negotiate new or better trade agreements with any of these countries. As of 3 PM on 4/3, the Dow a is down 1,400 points, NASDAQ 1,000 points, and the S&P nearly 300 points. Stocks globally are suffering. Amercans are afraid as we watch Trump and Elon Musk destroy our government, while also watching our retirement savings being decimated by these ill-considered across the board tariffs. Congress is not powerless to stop this. President's don't have an inherent power to unilaterally impose tariffs. It's a power delegated to the president by Congress in times of emergencies. But we are not in any kind of emergency, and it appears that President Trump is abusing this power. We need you to unite and take this power back to stop this insanity before these tariffs do serious damage to our economy that will take years to recover from. This is what your constituents sent you to Congress to do. It's time to step up, set politics and partisanship aside, and do your jobs to protect our economy and the American people
