I am a resident of Brown County in Green Bay, WI. I’ve lived in Wisconsin since 2003 and have been an advocate for, as well as a part of, the LGBTQ minority for as long as I can remember. Even growing up in a small town I knew the importance of living as your most authentic self and helping to support others to do so as well.
I am writing to urge you to vote NO on Assembly Bills AB100 and AB103. As a Wisconsinite, I am opposed to these bills because children of any minority, background, and gender identity have the right to be themselves without the risk of judgement and harassment. These bills risk these children not being able to have the same opportunities as any other child gets to have in their day to day school experience all due to simply expressing themselves in a different way. The way someone expresses their gender identity does not and will never be a threat to anyone. The only threat is when we take away that freedom and suppress people's rights simply for someone else's “comfort”.
AB100
Sports should be a place where youth are able to learn skills about teamwork, camaraderie, and how to accept one another but this bill creates a scenario in which people will be taught to fear and discriminate against their trans peers. The way this bill specifically targets trans youth is abhorrent and I will not stand for such hatred in my community.
AB103
This bill takes the power away from individuals to determine their identity and instead gives it to another just because they are in a position of power in the school. No one should be allowed to tell anyone who they are. Their identity is not a threat to anyone and never will be.
I hope you will support our children of all gender orientations and let them have the right to express their inner selves the way that brings the most comfort to themselves, not for others who it will have no effect on at the end of the day.
