An Open Letter

As a doctoral-level psychologist, I am writing to express my deep concern and strong opposition to Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s dangerous and misleading rhetoric regarding SSRI medications and mental health treatment. I am writing to express my deep concern and strong opposition to Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s dangerous and misleading rhetoric regarding SSRI medications and mental health treatment. His statements recklessly undermine well-established medical science and pose a significant threat to individuals who rely on these treatments for their well-being. SSRIs and other psychiatric medications have been rigorously studied and are essential tools in treating depression, anxiety, and other mental health disorders. While no medication is without risk, RFK Jr.'s fearmongering campaign against SSRIs ignores the overwhelming body of evidence demonstrating their effectiveness in improving lives. His claims not only spread misinformation but also stigmatize those who seek help for their mental health conditions. Mental health care in this country is already underfunded and stigmatized, and RFK Jr.'s irresponsible statements only exacerbate these issues. By painting SSRI medications as the root cause of societal violence or other unfounded claims, he distracts from the real problems we must address—access to affordable mental health care, gun safety legislation, and comprehensive treatment options. As my elected representative, I urge you to take a stand against this harmful rhetoric. I ask that you publicly denounce RFK Jr.'s false claims, advocate for policies that support evidence-based mental health treatment, and ensure that medical decisions remain in the hands of trained professionals rather than political figures pushing anti-science agendas. The millions of Americans struggling with mental health conditions deserve support, not baseless fear-mongering. We need leaders who prioritize facts, science, and compassionate care. I strongly urge you to take action in protecting mental health treatment access and ensuring that misinformation does not influence public policy. I appreciate your time and look forward to your response on this urgent matter.
