I am writing to express my deep concern regarding any proposals to reduce or eliminate funding for the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). Libraries are an essential part of our communities, providing critical access to information, education, and resources for people of all ages and backgrounds. Defunding IMLS would have devastating effects on public libraries, limiting their ability to serve as vital hubs of learning, workforce development, and community engagement.
Libraries are more than just places to borrow books; they offer essential programs that support literacy, digital inclusion, job training, and early childhood education. They provide access to the internet and technology for those who may not have it at home, ensuring equal opportunities for all. Libraries also serve as safe spaces for students, families, and seniors, fostering lifelong learning and community enrichment.
IMLS funding plays a crucial role in supporting these services, particularly in underserved communities where libraries serve as lifelines for education and employment opportunities. Cutting or eliminating this funding would disproportionately impact rural and economically challenged areas, widening the gap in access to critical resources.
I urge you to stand in support of our libraries and to reject any proposals that would reduce or eliminate funding for IMLS. Investing in libraries is an investment in our nation’s future, ensuring that all citizens have access to knowledge, technology, and opportunities to thrive.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I hope you will take action to protect and strengthen library funding.
