Protect free speech, stop immigration overreach against critics

To: Sen. Merkley, Rep. Salinas, Sen. Wyden

From: A constituent in Portland, OR

March 27

The Trump administration's harsh immigration enforcement policies, which led to the disturbing arrest and detention of a Tufts University graduate student with valid visa status, are unacceptable affronts to civil liberties. Grabbing a law-abiding student off the street and whisking her away over her political views sets a dangerous precedent that undermines free speech protections. This flagrant overreach by federal authorities, seemingly motivated by the student's criticism of Israel's treatment of Palestinians, betrays America's core values and democratic principles. Such heavy-handed tactics against those voicing dissent have no place in our society. The administration must immediately review its draconian procedures and provide full transparency into this outrageous incident. Vigorous oversight is imperative to prevent further abuses and safeguard the constitutional rights we hold dear.
