Safeguard civil liberties and constitutional rights for immigrants

To: Sen. Peters, Sen. Slotkin, Rep. Huizenga

From: A constituent in Portage, MI

March 28

The Trump administration's crackdown on student visas and detention of legal immigrants like Rumeysa Ozturk over protected speech is a blatant violation of civil liberties and the rule of law. Deporting foreign students and revoking visas without due process based solely on their opinions and peaceful protests sets a dangerous precedent that undermines core American values of free expression and open discourse. This heavy-handed approach not only tarnishes our international standing but will deter talented individuals from studying or working in the United States, harming our institutions of higher education and hindering scientific and economic progress. We must uphold constitutional rights and reject such authoritarian overreach. As representatives sworn to protect our democratic principles, it is imperative to take immediate action to stop these unjustified detentions, restore revoked visas, and safeguard the rights of all people in this country, regardless of immigration status.
