Reject the SAVE Act

To: Sen. Ossoff, Rep. Loudermilk, Sen. Warnock

From: A constituent in Roswell, GA

March 31

As a concerned constituent, I am urging you to oppose the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act. If passed into law, this legislation will disenfranchise millions of eligible voters, creating unnecessary barriers to voter registration and undermining free and fair elections. The SAVE Act is a bill in search of a problem. Federal and state laws already stipulate that only U.S. Citizens can vote in federal elections and provide for stiff penalties for violators. Overwhelming evidence shows noncitizen voting is vanishingly rare. This legislation applies to every American citizen and its burdens are extreme. According to the Brennan Center for Justice, approximately 21 million eligible voters lack access to the documentary proof of citizenship the bill requires. This bill would impact Americans of all backgrounds and political persuasions, and it would especially harm working-class people, rural voters, and Black people, who are less likely to have a passport, and married women who changed their name and do not have a birth certificate with their current legal name. When Kansas passed a similar law in 2011, 31,000 eligible voters were blocked from registering. We cannot afford to make the same mistake on a national scale. The ability to participate in our democracy should not be restricted by bureaucratic red tape that impacts millions of Americans, especially marginalized communities. If passed, it would be the largest rollback of federal voting rights since Reconstruction. I urge you to oppose this dangerous legislation and stand up for the fundamental right to vote. Please reject the SAVE Act and work to expand – not restrict – access to the ballot box. Thank you for your time and consideration.
