I am writing to express my absolute outrage over reports that the Trump camp is floating proposals that would effectively treat U.S. aid to Ukraine as a debt, potentially forcing Ukraine to "repay" support that was given in the name of democracy and global security. Even more appalling is the suggestion that Ukraine should hand over control of its natural resources in exchange for continued assistance.
President Zelensky has been clear—Ukraine will not sign an agreement that burdens “10 generations of Ukrainians” with repayment. And he’s right. The United States did not frame this aid as a loan when it was authorized, nor should we now allow bad-faith actors to rewrite history to justify an imperialist-style economic takeover.
If this aid were somehow to be reclassified as a loan, then it would be the most predatory loan in history—retroactively applying a 100% interest rate. That’s the only way to describe demanding repayment of grants that were explicitly never meant to be repaid. This is financial manipulation at its worst, and an insult to both Ukraine and American taxpayers who supported this aid in good faith.
This is a blatant attempt to exploit Ukraine’s struggle for sovereignty and turn it into a profit-driven scheme that benefits only the most corrupt elements of our political system. It is sickening and un-American. The U.S. must stand for freedom and self-determination, not predatory financial entrapment.
I urge you to immediately and unequivocally denounce this absurd proposal. Congress must make clear that aid to Ukraine is not for sale, nor is Ukraine itself. We must not allow Trump or his allies to twist American foreign policy into a tool for personal gain.
I expect a public statement from you on this issue, as well as any actions you intend to take to ensure such proposals never gain traction. I also expect you to publicly document your actions through social media and press conferences.
