Rein in tech giants' data harvesting, protect privacy

To: Rep. Morelle, Sen. Gillibrand, Sen. Schumer

From: A constituent in Webster, NY

April 2

The rampant data collection and surveillance by big tech companies poses a grave threat to our privacy and civil liberties. These corporations, driven by profit motives, have created an exploitative system where our personal information is commodified and sold to the highest bidder, often without our knowledge or consent. We must take a stand against this insidious invasion of privacy. The vast troves of data amassed by companies like Google, Amazon, Meta, and others provide a comprehensive digital footprint that can be easily accessed and abused by those in power. This concentration of personal data in the hands of a few billionaires and their corporations is a recipe for disaster, especially in an era of rising authoritarianism and fascism. We demand that robust privacy protections be put in place to safeguard our personal information from exploitation. Regulations must be enacted to curtail the unchecked data harvesting practices of these tech giants. Furthermore, we call for increased transparency and accountability, ensuring that individuals have control over their own data and the ability to opt-out of invasive tracking and profiling. The right to privacy is a fundamental human right that must be vigorously defended. We cannot allow the insatiable greed of corporations to trample upon our civil liberties. It is imperative that we take decisive action to reclaim our privacy and prevent the misuse of our personal data by those in positions of power. The erosion of privacy paves the way for authoritarianism, and we must not let that happen.
