Prioritize literacy initiatives and protect freedom to read

To: Sen. Cotton, Sen. Boozman, Pres. Trump, Rep. Hill

April 1

The ability to read and comprehend language is foundational for personal growth, economic opportunity, and civic engagement. Literacy unlocks the doors to knowledge, creativity, and self-expression. It is deeply concerning that literacy rates in our nation are declining, a trend that undermines the future prospects of our children and the strength of our society. We must take proactive measures to promote literacy development from an early age. This includes investing in quality education, providing engaging reading materials, and fostering a culture that values the written word. Book banning and censorship only serve to restrict access to ideas and stifle intellectual curiosity. The designation of March as National March into Literacy Month is a commendable effort to raise awareness and inspire action on this critical issue. However, sustained commitment and resources are needed year-round to reverse the alarming decline in literacy levels. We call upon our representatives to prioritize literacy initiatives, support libraries and reading programs, and protect the freedom to read diverse perspectives. Only through a literate populace can we hope to maintain a thriving democracy and empower future generations to reach their full potential.
