The SAVE Act would impose burdensome documentary proof of citizenship requirements that could disenfranchise millions of eligible American voters who lack ready access to documents like passports or birth certificates. Studies show only extremely rare incidents of non-citizen voting, so this extreme policy is a solution in search of a problem. It would disrupt election administration by upending voter registration processes and compelling faulty voter purges that sweep in U.S. citizens. The SAVE Act also threatens election officials with penalties if they make honest mistakes in evaluating citizenship status. Protecting the freedom to vote for all Americans is crucial for our democracy. I urge you to reject the SAVE Act and instead support policies that safeguard access to the ballot box and bolster secure, impartial election administration.
