It is unacceptable to abruptly suspend operations and terminate grants at the Institute of Museum and Library Services. This agency provides critical funding supporting libraries and museums nationwide, enabling vital programs and resources that greatly benefit communities across America. The IMLS awarded $266 million in grants last year alone to enable workforce development, enhance library services, preserve cultural heritage, and more. Cutting off this federal funding jeopardizes small and rural libraries in particular, stripping away access to books, computers, skills training and community enrichment. Libraries are essential public institutions serving all citizens regardless of means. Restoring full staffing and funding to the IMLS must be a priority to uphold these invaluable educational and cultural resources for the American people. The agency's work transcends politics and its very existence should not be undermined through partisan actions. I urge decisive steps to immediately reinstate IMLS employees, reactivate halted grants, and ensure robust funding for this vital organization moving forward.
