In his ignorance our president has imposed ludicrous tariffs on nations around the world. Everyone knows this is a poor choice for the US economy, for our standing in the world, for our international alliances, and for workers and businesses around the world. But these policies are not solely Trump’s to own. His collaborators in the US congress have allowed them. He depends upon factually unfounded justifications to implement powers given to him by Congress. He knows he is abusing those powers. He is testing the legislative branch to see if it will cede him control of all levers of power that it holds. The token motion by the Senate today to address tariffs on Canada is a small sign of courage - but it is too small and too late. I am writing now to ask you to continue working with your colleagues to take real actions to take back the powers that have too easily been given to a feckless, immoral, and incompetent fool who sees the presidency as a license to implement his childish vision on the world. Do not delay in condemning and countering these policies. Add them to the fight against the lawless firings of legislatively mandatory roles in the government, the extrajudicial abuse of police powers, the corrupt targeting of businesses and journalists, the dismantling of our vital science infrastructure, and the abuse of refugees and immigrants throughout our nation. It is time for the embarrassment that is Donald Trump and his collaborators to see consequences for their malfeasance.
