The treatment of individuals detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is deeply concerning, particularly the reported conditions in detention facilities. We must recognize that these centers should never be operated for profit motives, as prioritizing financial gain over basic human dignity is unacceptable. Profiting from the incarceration of vulnerable individuals is unethical and antithetical to our values as a society. I urge you to take immediate action to transition all ICE detention centers to non-profit operations overseen by entities focused solely on ensuring humane treatment and respect for the rights of detainees. For-profit prisons create perverse incentives to maximize occupancy and cut corners on essential services. This model has repeatedly failed to uphold even minimal standards of decency. We have a moral obligation to treat all people, regardless of immigration status, with compassion and fairness. Allowing private companies to profit from mass incarceration is a stain on our national conscience. I implore you to use your influence to end this exploitative system and restore integrity to our immigration enforcement policies. The human costs of inaction are simply too high.
