For-profit prisons create perverse incentives to maximize occupancy and cut corners on essential services. This model has repeatedly failed to uphold even minimal standards of decency. We have a moral obligation to treat all people, regardless of immigration status, with compassion and fairness. Allowing private companies to profit from mass incarceration is a stain on our national conscience.
