Reject Amendment 1 to HB1358 and Protect the Arts in Our Schools

To: Sen. Lewis, Rep. Grant

From: A constituent in Winfield, IL

March 11

The proposed legislation to create the Waiver Process Task Force threatens to undermine schools' ability to offer diverse educational opportunities like music and arts programs. While reviewing waiver processes is reasonable, severely restricting districts' flexibility to grant physical education waivers would directly impede students from pursuing enrichment courses that foster well-rounded development. Many schools rely on these waivers to accommodate fine arts, music, and other specialized classes desired by families. Limiting this option obstructs locally-tailored education plans and curtails student choice. Rather than constraining curricular freedom, the task force should explore balanced solutions that maintain schools' adaptability to meet varying student needs and community priorities. Preserving reasonable waiver allowances is crucial to upholding a comprehensive, student-centered approach to public education in our state.
