Defend Education – Stop Trump’s Attack on Our Schools Now
To: Sen. Moreno, Sen. Husted, Rep. Rulli
From: A verified voter in Canfield, OH
March 20
I am writing to demand that you stand up, show up, and fight against Trump’s all-out assault on education. His agenda is clear: dismantle public schools, gut the Department of Education, and strip resources from our most vulnerable students—all to finance tax handouts for billionaires. This is not just an attack on so-called “blue” states or urban districts. This reckless and destructive plan will harm every state, every community, and millions of children across the country. Public education is the backbone of our democracy, serving 90% of U.S. students and 95% of students with disabilities. Yet Trump and his allies want to take a wrecking ball to our schools, defunding the very programs that ensure equal opportunity for all students, regardless of income, background, or ability. If the Department of Education is gutted, we will see: • Larger class sizes and fewer teachers • Severe cuts to special education services • The erosion of civil rights protections for students of color, students with disabilities, and LGBTQ+ students • Elimination of essential student privacy protections, putting families at risk of abuse and even deportation • A loss of federal oversight, allowing school districts to ignore disparities in discipline, resources, and access to quality education Americans did not vote for, and do not support, ending the federal government’s commitment to ensuring equal educational opportunities. Promoting the myth of “federal tyranny” is a calculated effort to obscure the truth: low-income students, students with disabilities, and communities across rural, suburban, and urban America will suffer the most under this plan. The Department of Education exists to uphold federal laws that prohibit discrimination, protect student rights, and ensure every child has access to a quality education. Dismantling it would not only devastate families—it would erase decades of bipartisan progress in addressing racial and economic inequality in education. Without federal oversight, school districts will no longer be held accountable for racial and disability disparities in discipline, academic performance, and access to resources. As the Supreme Court unanimously affirmed in Brown v. Board of Education, public education “is the very foundation of good citizenship.” Destroying that foundation for partisan political gain is an act of betrayal against the children of this nation. I am calling on you to reject Trump’s extremist agenda and take action to protect the right of every student to a fair, equitable, and high-quality education. Anything less is a disgraceful abdication of your duty to the people you serve. What concrete steps will you take to protect America’s students? How will you fight back against this dangerous attack on education? We demand answers, and we will be watching.
