Advocate for the Approval of Modern Sunscreen Filters in the U.S.

To: Sen. Warner, Sen. Kaine

I am writing to urge your support in modernizing the regulations surrounding sunscreen filters in the United States. As someone who prioritizes effective sun protection, I am deeply frustrated by the outdated restrictions that prevent Americans from accessing superior sun care options available in other countries, particularly South Korea and the European Union. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not approved a new UV filter in over two decades, despite the significant advancements in sunscreen formulations worldwide. Many globally used ingredients—such as Tinosorb S, Tinosorb M, Uvinul A Plus, and Mexoryl SX—offer superior UVA and UVB protection, enhanced photostability, and improved cosmetic elegance compared to the limited options currently approved for use in the U.S. These filters are extensively studied and have been safely used in other countries for years. Meanwhile, American consumers are left with outdated and often inferior sunscreens that do not offer the same level of broad-spectrum protection. This issue is more than cosmetic—it is a matter of public health. Skin cancer remains the most common cancer in the United States, and increasing access to more effective sunscreens can significantly reduce the risk of UV-induced skin damage, premature aging, and malignancies such as melanoma. I urge you to take action by: 1. Advocating for the FDA to expedite the approval process for modern sunscreen filters that have been rigorously tested and safely used abroad. 2. Supporting legislative efforts that streamline the approval process for these ingredients, ensuring that Americans have access to the same sun protection innovations as other developed nations. 3. Engaging with dermatologists, public health experts, and consumer advocacy groups to emphasize the importance of this issue and push for regulatory updates. Consumers in the U.S. should not have to rely on international shipments or workaround solutions to access safe and effective sun protection. I strongly encourage you to support policies that bring American sunscreen regulations in line with modern science and global standards. Thank you for your time and attention to this critical issue. I look forward to your response and any updates on actions you plan to take.
