Reject consolidation of spending power, preserve Congressional oversight
To: Sen. Kim, Rep. Conaway, Sen. Booker
From: A constituent in Englishtown, NJ
March 11
The proposed stopgap funding bill raises significant concerns about concentrating excessive power in the executive branch to redirect spending priorities without Congressional oversight. By eliminating earmarks and omitting specific funding directives, the legislation creates unchecked "slush funds" that could enable the Trump administration and officials like Elon Musk to reshape spending in ways that undermine the balance of power and democratic accountability. This consolidation of authority over the public purse is unacceptable and jeopardizes vital programs relating to public safety, infrastructure, conservation, and more that Congress has historically guided through the regular appropriations process. Governance depends on robust checks and balances - a continuing resolution devoid of clear funding guidelines dangerously upends that crucial system. I urge you to reject this stopgap bill and instead insist on a full-year omnibus spending package that appropriately delineates funding levels in line with the will of the people's elected representatives in Congress.
