Defend the Judiciary: Stop Trump's Attack on the Rule of Law

To: Sen. Britt, Sen. Tuberville, Rep. Rogers

From: A constituent in Auburn, AL

March 19

I am writing to express my profound concern and outrage over President Donald Trump's escalating attacks on the judiciary, which threaten the foundational principle of the separation of powers enshrined in our Constitution. His recent actions and rhetoric demonstrate a blatant disregard for the rule of law and the independence of our judicial system. Notably, President Trump has publicly criticized judges who have ruled against his policies, referring to them in derogatory terms and questioning their legitimacy. For instance, after a federal judge issued a stay on his executive order regarding travel and immigration, the President disparaged the judge as a "so-called judge," suggesting that any adverse events should be blamed on the judiciary. BRENNAN CENTER FOR JUSTICE More recently, President Trump called for the impeachment of U.S. District Judge James E. Boasberg following a ruling that opposed his deportation plans. This unprecedented move prompted Chief Justice John Roberts to publicly rebuke the President, emphasizing that impeachment is not a tool for expressing disagreement with judicial decisions and underscoring the importance of judicial independence. AP NEWS Such actions are not merely inappropriate; they are dangerous. By undermining the credibility and authority of the judiciary, the President is eroding the checks and balances that are essential to our democracy. This pattern of behavior is reminiscent of authoritarian regimes where the rule of law is subverted for personal or political gain. As my elected representative, I urge you to take a stand against these attacks on our judicial system. It is imperative that Congress reaffirms its commitment to the Constitution and the separation of powers by: Publicly condemning any attempts by the executive branch to intimidate or undermine the judiciary. Supporting legislative measures that protect the independence of the judicial branch. Ensuring that any calls for the impeachment of judges are based solely on legitimate grounds, not as a response to unfavorable rulings. The integrity of our democracy depends on the unwavering independence of our courts. I implore you to act decisively to safeguard this pillar of our nation.
