Please protect families from recklessness and cruelty

I am a teacher in Springfield, VA, and I wanted to message you about several issues that are affecting my community. First, the order cutting humanitarian aid to Gaza is reprehensible. My Palestinian students are so worried for their relatives. Our government must work to reinstate UNRWA, which is perhaps the only organization that can prevent the innocent civilians from starving. Please also refuse to send more bombs to Israel as they continue to slaughter civilians - we are already complicit in a genocide and should not dig ourselves deeper. Secondly, please do everything in your power to stop Elon Musk's reckless purging of federal employees, many of whom are disabled veterans. In my school alone, three teachers' spouses have been fired because of these cuts and the end to USaid, and they will not be able to support their families on only a teacher's salary. Also, I know Republicans' cruel budget slashing aid for already-struggling families passed the House - please do not let it pass the Senate. Finally, please, please protect our immigrant neighbors. They are not criminals, they are hardworking, kind people who enrich our society by the culture, skills, and values that they bring with them. The immigrant children in my school are wonderful, with curious minds and kind hearts, kids who love to learn, to play soccer, to be with their friends, to read to their little brothers and sisters. They teach friends words in the languages they know, and take newcomer students under a welcoming wing. They show their brilliance every day. But they are terrified for their families. Many students in one of our third grade classes came to school crying after Trump's executive order allowing ICE raids in schools and churches. They are frightened for their families, for their safe places that are safe no longer, for the life their parents have built for them that might be ripped away. Please don't let their fears be founded because of their government's inaction. Please do everything you can to protect these kids.
