Urge release of detained academic for exercising free speech

To: Sen. Moran, Sen. Marshall, Rep. Estes

From: A constituent in Wichita, KS

March 28

The recent detention of Turkish doctoral student Rumeysa Ozturk by federal agents raises grave concerns about the erosion of free speech protections in the United States. Ozturk was apprehended without due process solely for co-authoring an op-ed expressing her political views, a fundamental right guaranteed by the First Amendment. This heavy-handed response to protected speech represents a disturbing overreach by the government. Detaining individuals for voicing dissenting opinions, regardless of their immigration status, is antithetical to American values of free expression and open discourse. It sets a dangerous precedent that threatens to chill free speech and academic freedom, core pillars of a functioning democracy. If left unchallenged, such actions could enable the government to suppress any viewpoint it arbitrarily deems objectionable. The ability to voice political opinions without fear of retaliation is essential for a free society. Silencing perspectives through intimidation tactics is a hallmark of authoritarian regimes, not a nation built on constitutional liberties. Protecting Ozturk's rights safeguards the rights of all to participate in robust civil debate. I urge you to condemn this violation of free speech in the strongest terms and demand Ozturk's immediate release from detention. Failing to do so would undermine cherished American principles and embolden further encroachments on fundamental freedoms. We must remain unwavering in our commitment to upholding constitutional rights for all people within our borders.
