End U.S.-Canada trade war through negotiation, not tariffs

To: Sen. Scott, Rep. Castor, Sen. Moody

From: A constituent in Tampa, FL

March 11

The escalating trade war with Canada is deeply concerning for the American economy and businesses. Doubling tariffs on steel and aluminum imports to 50% will undoubtedly lead to higher costs passed on to consumers and disruptions in manufacturing supply chains that rely on these materials. The stock market's dramatic selloff over the past two weeks reflects growing fears that these tariffs could push the economy into recession. We need to prioritize ending this trade dispute through negotiation rather than escalating it further with more tariffs. While protecting domestic industries is important, this approach risks harming more U.S. businesses and consumers than it helps in the long run. There are better ways to address issues like aluminum and dairy pricing that don't undermine the overall U.S.-Canada economic relationship. I urge you to reconsider this latest tariff increase and instead pursue a negotiated solution that avoids damaging effects on the economy. Let's get both countries back to freer trade that benefits businesses and citizens rather than punitive tariffs that act as tax hikes. American economic strength depends on stable trade relations with our closest allies and trading partners.
