I am reaching out today to express my strong opposition to the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act.
This legislation imposes unnecessary and burdensome proof-of-citizenship requirements for voter registration. While proponents claim it enhances election security, the reality is that it creates significant barriers for millions of eligible voters, particularly marginalized groups such as military service members, tribal citizens, married women, naturalized citizens, rural voters, and seniors. These groups often face challenges in accessing the required documents, such as passports or original birth certificates.
Election officials already verify voter eligibility using secure state and federal data, and it is already illegal for non-citizens to vote in federal elections. The SAVE Act does nothing to improve election security but instead risks disenfranchising law-abiding citizens who have every right to participate in our democracy. This bill is a solution in search of a problem and undermines the fundamental right to vote.
I urge you to reject the SAVE Act and instead focus on legislation that expands access to the ballot box for all eligible Americans. Our democracy thrives when every voice is heard, and we should be working to remove barriers to voting, not create new ones.
Thank you for your time and for considering my concerns. I hope you will stand with voters and oppose this harmful legislation.
