Support Gender Marker Updates on Identification Documents

To: Rep. Amodei, Sen. Cortez Masto, Sen. Rosen

From: A verified voter in Reno, NV

March 6

I am writing to urge you to support policies that allow individuals to update their gender markers on identification documents without unnecessary barriers. The ability to have legal documents that accurately reflect one’s gender is not just a bureaucratic formality—it is a fundamental issue of dignity, safety, and equality. Restrictive policies that make it difficult—or even impossible—for transgender individuals to update their IDs force them into situations where they are outed against their will, increasing their risk of discrimination, harassment, and even violence. No one should have to fear for their safety simply because their identification does not align with who they are. I urge you to support legislation that: - Streamlines the process of updating gender markers on federal documents. - Protects transgender individuals from unnecessary bureaucratic hurdles that put them at risk. - Upholds the right of all people to self-identify through the use of form DS-5504 and other accessible processes. This is a matter of basic human rights. Transgender and nonbinary people deserve the same ability as anyone else to have identification that reflects their true identity. I ask that you take a stand for fairness and equality by supporting policies that ensure every American can live with dignity and safety. I look forward to your response and action on this issue.
