The incident during the congressional hearing on sanctuary cities involving representatives James Comer and Ayanna Pressley is shocking and concerning. Regardless of political affiliations, sex, or race, all members of congress should be shown respect to carry out duties according to established procedures. Silencing or interrupting colleagues undermines the democratic process and prevents a full exchange of perspectives. While disagreements are inevitable, the ability to have debates and enter relevant information into the official record is essential for an effective legislative body. Shutting down dissenting perspectives not only stifles discourse but also prevents critical facts from being considered. Especially when addressing a complex issue such as immigration policy, your constituents want to see a civil conversation. We want our views to be shared and heard, not shouted over. The way Ayanna Pressley was treated was vile, and James Comer should be held accountable for his disgraceful abuse of power.
