Abandoning European Allies

To: Sen. Slotkin, Sen. Peters, Rep. McDonald Rivet

From: A constituent in Saginaw, MI

April 1

The leaked Pentagon memo highlights a significant shift in U.S. military strategy, emphasizing that the United States is not prepared to deploy troops to assist European allies in the event of a Russian invasion. Instead, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has made it clear that American forces will be primarily focused on deterring China and protecting U.S. territory. This stance signals a move towards a more inward-focused defense posture, prompting European nations to reevaluate their reliance on U.S. military intervention. In response, European leaders are increasingly advocating for the development of stronger, more autonomous defense capabilities. The memo underlines that while the United States will continue to provide support through nuclear deterrence, it expects European countries to shoulder a greater share of the burden in managing regional security challenges. This realignment is likely to encourage Europe to invest more substantially in its own defense infrastructure and collective security arrangements. The consequences of this strategic shift extend well beyond Europe’s borders, affecting global political and military relations. For the United States, this pivot may lead to a recalibration of its alliances and a potential reassessment of its role on the world stage. Critics argue that by stepping back from direct military intervention, the U.S. might risk weakening its influence over international security dynamics, thereby reshaping power balances in regions that have historically relied on American support. Moreover, this new approach stands in stark contrast to the historical application of NATO’s Article 5, which has only been enacted in defense of the United States, notably following the September 11 attacks. The fact that collective defense measures have been predominantly U.S.-oriented underscores the symbolic and practical significance of this policy shift. As global security challenges evolve, the United States’ decision to prioritize its own defense raises important questions about the future of multinational military cooperation and the evolving nature of international alliances. This is a betrayal of our allies, that have risked and lost lives in the defense of the United States when it was under attack. This is disgraceful and utterly embarrassing. I am deeply outraged that congress has allowed this situation to escalate unchecked, with no repercussions for those responsible. Immediate action is both urgent and absolutely essential. I hold you accountable for the consequences of this failure of national security, global politics, and the defense of our long time allies.
