Why you have to save the Department of Education. The Department of Education played a significant role in the scrutiny and eventual closure of Trump University, which was a for-profit education institution associated with Donald Trump. The primary concerns about Trump University were related to allegations of fraud and deceptive practices in its marketing and operations. Here are some key points regarding the Department of Education's involvement: 1. **Regulatory Oversight**: The Department of Education is responsible for overseeing educational institutions that receive federal funding. Trump University, which was marketed as a university but did not confer degrees, faced scrutiny for its business practices and claims. 2. **Consumer Complaints**: The Department received numerous complaints from students who claimed they were misled by the university's advertising and were unhappy with the courses they took. These complaints prompted a deeper examination of the institution's operations. 3. **Investigation**: In response to the allegations and complaints, the Department of Education, along with state regulators, investigated Trump University. The University was accused of making fraudulent claims about the success of its programs and the qualifications of its instructors. 4. **State Actions**: The New York State Attorney General filed a lawsuit against Trump University in 2013, alleging that it engaged in illegal business practices. The investigation and legal actions by state officials were influenced by the broader scrutiny from federal authorities. 5. **Closure Announcement**: In 2017, after years of legal challenges and in the face of mounting pressure from regulatory bodies, Trump University announced that it would dissolve. Although the Department of Education was not solely responsible for the shutdown, its regulatory framework and the investigations it conducted were part of the broader set of challenges that contributed to the institution's closure. Ultimately, the Department of Education's role was part of the larger context of regulatory oversight that led to the scrutiny and eventual dissolution of Trump University amid serious allegations of fraud. That is just one example of the good work the DOE. We have to have Cops on the beat especially when dealing with fraud. Save Our Agencies; Reinstate the Inspector Generals; and our Merit based Civil Service 1/3 of whom are veterans.
