I am writing to express my strong opposition to Speaker Mike Johnson's proposal to eliminate certain federal courts. I believe that this proposal undermines the essential principles of justice, fairness, and the balance of power that are foundational to our Constitution and democracy. Federal courts play a critical role in ensuring that justice is served across the United States, interpreting the law in ways that reflect both the letter and spirit of the Constitution. Their independence is vital for upholding the rule of law, protecting individual rights, and safeguarding our democracy from political overreach. Reducing the number of these courts would weaken the judicial branch and erode the system of checks and balances that has been in place since the founding of our nation. Moreover, eliminating federal courts could lead to delays in the judicial process, particularly in areas where access to courts is already limited. It would further burden state courts, which are not always equipped to handle the complexity of federal cases or address constitutional issues that require specialized knowledge. This would harm all of us that rely on the federal judiciary for fair and unbiased rulings, especially in matters of civil rights, environmental protections, and corporate accountability. I urge you to stand against this proposal and to continue supporting a strong, independent federal judiciary that serves all Americans. The role of the federal courts in providing equal protection under the law is irreplaceable, and any attempt to dismantle or diminish their power poses a direct threat to the justice system we rely on.
