Restore Congressional Authority Over Trade Policy

To: Sen. Fetterman, Sen. McCormick, Rep. Thompson

From: A constituent in State College, PA

April 4

I am writing to urge you to support legislation that limits the President’s ability to impose tariffs through executive order without congressional approval. Trade policy has far-reaching consequences for our economy, and decisions about tariffs should not be made unilaterally. When the executive branch uses emergency powers or executive authority to impose tariffs without oversight, it bypasses the constitutional role of Congress and can result in unintended harm to American businesses, workers, and consumers. Congress must reassert its authority in matters of international trade and ensure that such impactful decisions go through a transparent, deliberative process. Requiring congressional approval for tariffs imposed by executive order would restore balance between the branches of government and help prevent politically motivated or economically damaging actions. I urge you to support bipartisan efforts to safeguard our economy and uphold the separation of powers. Thank you for your service and leadership.
